Bad practice where you would least expect it

Although Fodor's prides itself on giving us the "best information", their forum's moderators seem to perceive their task as a full-fledged censorship board. A post that did nothing else but pointing readers to the EcoBurma website has been removed and the account canceled, although it was clearly in line with Fodor's own proclaimed forum rules: no profanity or vulgar language, no attacks, no inflammatory material, clearly about travel, no commercial posting, no copyrighted material, certainly not monopolizing the board, and no provocation, apart from possibly provoking the Burmese regime!

The only feature that made the unfortunate post different from others that were allowed to stay is that it was not about satisfying the needs of tourists, but about the rights of the people at the destinations. It must be concluded that responsible travel is not in line with Fodor's mission.

I have sent a request for clarification on 30 October 2011. As soon as I receive an answer, I will post it here.

Travel to Burma with a vehicle

Ma Rek 13 years ago updated by loken rabera 12 years ago 9

Hi,

we will be travelling through South-East Asia by car at the end of the year. We would like to drive through Burma from India and continue to Thailand or Laos. I know it has been impossible so far, but I have noticed that recently a group of motorcyclists managed to do that.

Could you recommend somebody to talk to regarding this possibility?

Thanks!

On this site there is a picture/poster of Buddha reaching down to a small elephant  Could you tell me the location of this Buddha and also where I might obtain a copy of the poster? I am not certain that my request was sent or when or how I was to get the information. It would be helpful to know if people are to check back on the site.  It would be better if there were a method of leaving an email address.

Thank you.

Good and Bad experiance at first time in the country

Gerd Schenk 11 years ago 0
Now Myanmar has realy the chance to avoid all the normal mistaks for a country who opens up.
There are signs it goes there,In Hostels the breakfast is often genuine lokal, healthy and I enjoyt it,only some Ozies screamed"I want bread"meaning this white "rubber bread" So keep your culture and leave the  TV free of stupid western nonsens  vidio clips. Complaints:got a ferry ticket to Bagan from Mandalay Tourist office(for the 8th of Jan.),my seat was sold twice, the ferry left late and was in Bagan 2 houers late.As my pretty new Map (from T.O.)indicated the busstation is close to the Jetty I started walking into the night.
But the busstation is on a new location now ,far away.So I could not catch my bus to Yangon that night.
The rason I was in such a hurry, my daughter needet assistance in Australia and the IN in Mandaly was desruptet with and wthout power cuts all 3 days I was there. The IN in Bagan I was informed was not working for the last 3 month. So I coul not  book a hotel for Yangon which I tried to reach as quick as I could.Yangon has pretty good working IN .
In Yangon the pigons seems sacret and getting well fed all the time, does the Dep. of Health not get worried about desise from the dead and living birds who are there every day en mass?
City Buses driving like on a race track when the road is clear but it is still dangerous in a city where many people dont adhere to road rules.
I wish this country a lot of good luck with the huge tasks ahead-I just would give up to bring 120 ethnic groups under one umbrella(anderstand I am 77)
regards Gerd

DondeteMetes BlogdeViajes 12 years ago 0
Good evening
Im Diego Chiessa from Spain, and manager of Dondetemetes.net travel blog

In some months will cross Myanmar in a solo travel and would like to get in touch with people who can help me to discover this amazing and wild country

I already have the flight and most of accomodations, but maybe we can make an arrangement which satisfies both sides, like for example use my visit to  help your tourism with spanish/latin public and at the same time, help me to discover more Myanmar, because im not just interested in the typical touristic places, also discover people, culture and mix with locals

thanks a lot

Does anyone have experience with entering or leaving Burma/Myanmar on the road through the border with Thailand - not just for a round trip, but connecting to the central regions.

Anne Browne 14 years ago 0

Hi, I am a bit faddy when it comes to food.  I would appreciate some firsthand restaurant recommendations in Yangon, Mandalay and Kalaw.  I am not a veggie so am open to meat/ fish restaurants too.

Readers of this website may also be interested in these travel tips for Burma.  I came accross this site and found it useful.
